I would use check of cgreen, they are C testing frameworks. I've already used 
check for csync and I've did some bugfixing at cgreen and have svn write 
access to it.

I don't know what you mean with quite expensive, but think of smbtorture like 
check + additional functions for testing the smb protocol, samba server and 
client.
