Try taking a look at the Putty source, it's got good support for SSHv1 and SSHv2 but it only implements SSH client functions. The code is much more complex than libssh but there's a consistent logic throughout its design. It produces a suite of tools, command line and UI SSH clients. Once you've got the command lines clients (plink) working, you can zero in on the internal functions using a debugger.
